PRESS RELEASE
Condemning Maldivian Government’s Decision to Cut Off Ties with the State of Qatar
Malé, Maldives – 6 June 2017 – Adhaalath Party strictly denounces and condemns the government of President Abdulla Yameen’s unilateral decision to sever the longstanding diplomatic relation with the brotherly State of Qatar. This abrupt decision of President Yameen’s government is akin to the malevolences it has been exercising over its own kind and also is contrary to the spirit of this holy month of Ramadan that demands to strengthen brotherly ties instead of abrogating them.
Adhaalath Party recognizes and appreciates the invaluable assistance of our brotherly State of Qatar towards us, the people of Maldives; especially in the areas of socioeconomic development, health and education. However, the Party now fears over the foreseeable consequences of this impulsive and shortsighted decision of the government of President Abdulla Yameen.
The Maldives has been a member of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) since 1976 and has always maintained a balanced foreign policy in the best interest of global harmony. However, since the inception of this government of President Yameen in 2013, the country is being hauled into issues and conflicts between global power blocs as well as into similar matters within the Islamic World, in spite of the fact that the country has no direct stake in them. As a consequence of this inimical foreign policy of President Yameen, the Maldives is being persistently isolated to the point that the country might soon be diplomatically secluded from its very own neighbors. Under these circumstances, Adhaalath Party believes that the role of President Yameen’s government to obtrude in the issues in Islamic World to abet it further would be horrific and calamitous.
For the aforementioned reasons, Adhaalath Party calls upon the government of President Abdulla Yameen to refraining from colluding in any endeavor that may afflict harm in the Islamic World. Concurrently, the Party also calls upon the government to observe restraint in matters amongst power blocs and to formulate and exercise an independent foreign policy that would serve the best interest of the people of Maldives in particular and to the world in general. Adhaalath Party strongly believes that all diplomatic correspondences and conclusions of the Maldives should be exercised independently without any coercion and compulsion whatsoever.
